Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to share with you some of the language skills we have been working on together as a class during circle time.
1. "Social Thinking" - You have already received a letter about this curriculum. Each time we address a new skill you will receive a parent letter to go along with the skill. Please read these letters and try to practice the concepts at home as well. Right now we are focusing on "thinking thoughts and feeling feelings."
2. "Matt and Molly" - This activity centers around listening to a 4 part story with corresponding picture cards, and then re-telling the story in the correct sequencing using the most relevant details. During this time we also work on listening comprehension and responding to "wh" and "how" questions regarding the story.
At home, you can have your child "re-tell" some of their favorite stories. Also, you can ask your child various questions about stories including: "What do you think will happen next," "How do you know.....," and "Why" questions.
3. "Show & Tell" - During the time a child brings in something special from home. He does not tell the kids what he brought; instead he uses his expressive language skills in order to describe what is in the bag (we call this "giving clues"). Next, the rest of the class gets to try to guess what's in the show and tell bag. During this time, the show and teller gets to call on his friends to make guesses. Once the item is shown to the class, the students are encouraged to ask the show and teller questions about their item (e.g., "Who gave that to you," "Where do you keep it," etc). We are trying to facilitate social skills and asking peers questions in order to gain more information about them. The kids have a lot of fun working on their social language skills during show and tell :)
